In general, the cryptographic community is divided over the recommended key size for asymmetric keys and what is referred to as the "huge key debate". If 1024 bit keys are secure, why use larger keys ? The counter argument is that the only disadvantage to using larger keys is the longer time required to process them. CPU cycles are cheap and getting cheaper every year. This aids the cryptographer and cryptanalyst alike. So why not use the largest key size contemporary computers can handle ?
